Spring Mushroom Hunting with The Mushroom Hunting Foundation - Presented by the Friends of JPL

Spring Mushroom Hunting in Rhode Island

Guided walk class with The Mushroom Hunting Foundation

Saturday, June 7th at 9.30 a.m.
Meet at the library before heading to Parker Farm.

Recommended for adults and mature kids; to join this outdoor class, anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian, or at least have the guardian sign a waiver on their behalf.

In our region, the spring season brings out many amazing mushroom species.  The instructors will lead us into the forest for a close look at local fungi in their natural habitats.  In addition to learning about the fascinating science of mushroom identification, you’ll see firsthand how the collecting tools are used, and hear great tips on photographing the wild mushrooms that grow right here in our own local forests.

The hike will not be difficult, but don’t wear your best shoes and clothes.  Students should bring their cameras, or phones with ringers off.

About the Instructors:  Ryan T. Bouchard is the author and photographer of the influential book Gourmet Mushrooms of the Northeast 2019.  Emily Schmidt also studies our local mushroom species (and wild plants as well), and teaches creative cooking that highlights their many unique flavors.  Together, they created The Mushroom Hunting Foundation, and have educated thousands of people about safely enjoying America’s incredible wild foraging.
